The Ebola outbreak is the heaviest in the Congo, according to the Health Ministry last night. Probably 198 people died in northern provinces of Kivu and Ituri. A total of 319 people are ill.
The means to prevent the outbreak are more difficult by repeated attacks by armed groups on helpers and by resistance in the affected communities. Security is the biggest challenge, said World Health Organization Director-General Tadros Edhom Gavrissus, followed by public distrust.
In the terror attacks, rescue operations will cease. "If the task stops, the virus gets an advantage."
Since the discovery of the Ebola virus in 1976, the Congo has already had ten outbreaks of the deadly disease. Meanwhile, rescue teams are trying to stop even further by vaccinations. The worst outbreak between 2013 and 2016 has so far affected 28,000 people in West Africa.
