Increasing taxes on sweetened beverages

The government announced: there will be no new taxes, but will be an exception. The exception relates to the famous tax on sweet products. And for a good reason, the number of diabetics continues to grow from year to year in French Polynesia where 45,000 people have type 2 diabetes.

On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, Wednesday, November 14, the health services provoked a cry. On the level of Polynesia first, Eck Rainel, the health minister, announced that taxes of sugary drinks and products containing hidden sugars will increase by 25% from January 1 next.

The money from these taxes will be directed specifically at implementing preventive measures. "This taxation will be allocated directly to a special account, it will fall into the common pot of the budget of Polynesia"Says Teva Rohfritz, Vice President.
