Eating and drinking for a week without extra sugars. This is the challenge of the Diabetes National Diabetes Challenge. On Monday, the healthy week begins, for which about 30,000 people were registered.
"On average, we get 1.5 to 2 times the sugar each day better than we do, often without being aware of it, by adding sugars to the products," says CEO Hanneke Dessing of the Diabetes Foundation.
About half of adults in the Netherlands are overweight and therefore have an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In this type, the body no longer responds to insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar. Insulin is, so to speak, invisible, and can not do its job.
More than 1 million people have this form of diabetes and a thousand are added per week, according to the Diabetes Foundation.
The participants in the Challenge received the appropriate digital magazine. It contains recipes, shopping lists, tips, questionnaires and lots of information about sugars in food.
According to the recommendation of the World Health Organization WHO, an older woman may receive 50 grams of free sugars per day, an adult person 60 grams. Free sugars are all sugars added by the manufacturer and all sugars from honey, syrups, fruit juices and fruit concentrate.
Sugar cube equals 4 grams of sugar. A mature woman is therefore allowed to consume 12.5 sugar cubes of free sugar daily on WHO's recommendation. A man is allowed a little more, that is 15 cubes of sugar. This is because men have a greater energy requirement.
According to the Diabetes Foundation, the Dutch are far above it. "We eat about 20 sugar cubes of free sugars a day, which amounts to 30 kilograms of free sugars a year. "
