Chile records record exports of fresh fruit, driven by more shipments to China and American economy



Santiago. Exports of Chilean fruit grew 6.7 percent to historic levels in the 2017-2018 season, due to higher demand from Asia and especially from China, the union said on Thursday.

The Chilean Exporters Association (ASOEX) reported that a total of 2.78 million tons of fruit were shipped abroad.

"This increase is explained, mainly in Asia and China, by peak volumes reached blueberry cherries, and in the case of cherries, the increase has reached 96%," said Ronald Boone, president of ASOEX.

He added that Asia is the fastest growing market for exports, with an increase of 30.7%. China's role was central, in the midst of an escalation in the trade war with the United States.

At the national level, the United States is the main export destination for exports from China, followed by China-Hong Kong, the Netherlands, England and Colombia.

"This growth reflects the great interest that the Asian-Pacific markets have gained … in which China has become a major market." We believe that in the near future, Asia, especially China, will be the main shipping market. Of Chilean fruits, "Boone said.

Although the United States and Canada were the main target markets for Chilean fruits (32%) during the season, there was a 2.6% drop in deliveries due to greater diversification of destinations.

The leader of ASOEX also reported an increase in deliveries to Europe, which reached 658,711 tons, an increase of 10.3%.

At the national level, the United States is the main export destination for exports from China, followed by China-Hong Kong, the Netherlands, England and Colombia.
