The scientist says that the solar system is surrounded by a huge magnetic tunnel

Its model could unite two structures in the sky that were previously thought to be unconnected.

Tunnel-like structure

The astronomer proposed a bold model that indicates that the entire solar system is surrounded by a massive magnetic tunnel.

The model focuses on two main structures in the sky: the North Pole and the fan area, according to a press release from University of Toronto. While the structures have apparently not been connected since their discoveries in the 1960s, a team of researchers at the university led by astronomer Dr. West has now suggested that they are actually part of a huge tunnel-like magnetic field orbiting the solar system.

“If we were looking up at the sky we would see the tunnel-like structure in almost every direction we looked — that is, if we had eyes that could see radio light,” West said in a press release. She and her team published an article about their findings in science.

A unifying space

To reach their conclusions, West built its own computer model to simulate what the radio sky looks like from Earth. By doing so the team was able to hypothesize that the two structures are connected by “rope-like” magnetic wires, according to the publication.

West estimates that the buildings are about 350 light-years from our solar system and are nearly 1,000 light-years long. “This is the equivalent of the trillion-mile distance between Toronto and Vancouver,” West said in a statement.

Future research

The team plans to complete even more complex modeling in the future – in hopes of revealing and understanding the role of the magnetic tunnel in the galaxy.

“Magnetic fields do not exist in isolation. Everyone must connect to each other,” West said in the release. “So the next step is to better understand how this local magnetic field connects to both the larger-scale galactic magnetic field and the smaller-scale magnetic fields of our Sun and Earth.”

She added, “I think it’s just amazing to imagine these buildings being everywhere, every time we look up at the night sky.”
