About 750,000 young girls have been vaccinated against the HPV virus in Portugal in the last 10 years, accounting for 86% of the population eligible for the vaccine, making the country an "international model."

The data were published by the Director-General of Health at a ceremony marking 10 years of the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine, which can cause cervical cancer.

The HPV vaccine, with the vaccine included in the national vaccination program, began in October 2008.
