On Thursday, November 15, 2018, exactly five years have passed since the beginning of the first 4G trading network in Slovakia. During the entire period, it was possible to significantly improve all the parameters of the network, to get it where a fast mobile Internet still does not reach a few kilometers in Slovakia.
2013: 4G network begins unexpectedly in five cities
Slovak Telecom launched a 4G network early in five Slovak cities (Nitra, Trnava, Zlina, Banska Bystrica, Praszow). It was originally at 73/23 Mbps and, in particular, data transfer has been a significant step forward in this version. Sending pictures, sharing videos and files has been 10 to 20 times faster. By the end of the year, coverage had risen to 31 places and 23.7% of the population.
2014: 4G network for more than half the population and new speeds
After a successful 4G network bandwidth, Telecom arrives in Bratislava in April 2014 with the 4G network in Bratislava, where it introduces new maximum speeds: 150 Mbps for download and 50 Mbps. These can be achieved thanks to a better band, but at the same time, they require even heavier coverage in housing estates. A few weeks later, Koshka and Terezin also arrived.
By the end of 2014 already more than half of Slovakia was covered: already 52%. Apart from 84 cities and many villages, tourist areas like Štrbské Pleso also grew.
: 4G + comes and a new speed limit of 225 and 300 Mbps
In 2015, progress has progressed, crossing the border 75%. The 4G network was available for 134 cities and hundreds of other villages by the end of the year, including new ski resorts such as Chopok, Jasna, Donovaly, Malino Brdo and Velka Rača.
This year, Telecom has come up with new technological innovations. In June, LTE-CA (4G +) expanded to 225 Mbps in Nitra and overcame it in November LTE-CA to 300 Mbps In Bratislava.
At the same time, Telecom received two of the best P3 certificates in tests thanks to the highest score in the Slovak network test.
2016: 375 Mbps on a 4G network and all cities are covered
Telecom has gained new milestones – covering 140 seats at the end of March 2016, with total coverage rising to 87.2% at the end of the year. The 4G + network is also present in other cities like Košice, Trenčín, Senec and Marianka.
Speed racing did not occur – in December, 4G network was launched with speed up 375 Mbps In different parts of Bratislava.
Two additional test passes are tested as quality, with Telecom managing to skip dozens of other operators in the report.
2017: 4G network calls and strong test result
Even in 2017, the coverage of the 4G network has expanded in two directions – 89% of the population has already reached the base, and 4G + has arrived, for example, Pezinka, Poprad, Zvolen, Piešanyany or Nový Zámkov.
A major innovation is the beginning of service VoLTE (Voice over LTE). Thanks to this, customers do not need to switch from 4G to 3G / 2G networks to make a call, get higher quality, and make a fast connection.
In the fall, Telecom won Best of the F3 Best Test with the highest score.
2018: 4G speeds again – up to 877 Mbps
In 2018, Telecom used its technological know-how for a trio of news that brought customers at higher speeds. Thanks to the so-called "64QAM modulation has increased capacity by up to 50% when sending data, the new maximum upload is 75 Mbps.
256QAM modulation again accelerated the ability to download data, the download has increased by about a third, and the maximum current has changed from 375 to 500 Mbps.
Finally, Telecom joined the integration of several bands and spectrum, added 4 × 4 MIMO solutions and has already reached a new peak in Bratislava: 877 Mbps.
Real tests and solutions
Telecom conducted several tests on the 4G network during the years 2014-2016, which were later used in real commercial deployment. Between one and two years running between the pilot and the real world, when new speeds of 300, 375 and 877 Mbps are gradually.
How is a 4-year operation performed?
The 4G network has a significant impact on overall data traffic. 3G network customers have begun to emerge, but up to 4G network proves significant growth and key contribution. By comparison, in 2014, customers have delivered 7 PB data, while in 2018 Telecom expects Up to three times the volume.
The share of 4G network is gradually rising in overall traffic. At the end of 2014, it was close to 10%, a year later it reached 30%, at the end of 2016 it exceeded 60% and is Over 80% of total data traffic.
VoLTE as a modern technology
Start VoLTE, which means 4G network calls have been expected for quite some time and represents a step forward customer experience. On a 4G network, you can connect the call in 1 to 2 seconds to achieve a higher connection quality. More than 50 models with VoLTE support are now in the Telekom portfolio, including a full range of Apple devices. Their number will continue to rise, which will help technology become a new standard.
