Typically, the demand for ferries grows mainly during the summer months, and in some cases, ferries also represent a daily, essential transport tool. The electric ferry Ticho Brahe and Aurora, the largest ferry with such a drive, travel from Sweden to Denmark.
Alternative drives gradually come to a shorter delivery. The required pathways are known in advance, enabling the design of a battery pack and a medium charge of batteries.
Daily ferries are flooded almost 190 km
Since Helsingborg Sweden and Lanning Leningor since last year, Forsa Ferry is driven by electric propulsion. They took over the transportation tasks at the very busy port. After being driven by diesel engines, they were converted into electricity within eight weeks. The diesel engine remained on deck only as failures.
The distance between the two places is only four kilometers, which is transported by shuttle every 15 minutes or 46 times a day. Every day, each of them crosses about 186 km.In this, seven million passengers almost two million vehicles are transported annually.
Dirty diesel and dirty electricity: who pulls your nose?
The batteries are very large and the electricity is used as a "green"
Because the ship is so big, it also needs very large batteries. The ship is managed by four engines with a total capacity of 6 megawatts and a battery of 4.1 megawatts. Today's electric cars have the largest batteries with a capacity of about 100 kilowatt hours. According to the company's rechargeable battery, only renewable electricity from water and wind is used.
Despite the exceptionally large battery, this energy provides only 3.5 kilometers or about 14 kilometers. At each station (nine minutes in Sweden, five minutes in Denmark), the battery is charged briefly. The battery is expected to last at least five years, and the ship's investment (27 million euros) is expected to be returned to its owners within eight years.
