2019 Players Championship Leaderboard Breakdown: Rory McIlroy goes low, leading leads after 36 holes

Maybe there will not be enough Toptracer software for the weekend. Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood – Palms prominent, both – co-lead the 2019 Championship Players after 36 holes as both dropped 12 under 132s during the first two days of TCP Sawgrass. For Fleetwood, it was 65-67. For McIlroy, it was the opposite, 67-65.

Add them all on Friday evening, and you get what should be the slugfest weekend from two of the best sports now. Let's look at the 36-hole leaderboard from the Sawgrass TPC.

1. Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood (-12): How do you understand 65 on Thursday? If you are in Fleetwood, you go with a 3-3-2 start on Friday. Fleetwood came out at 33 and returned home at 34 with a nasty 18-bird, and now is where he was last week after 36 holes – sleeping on the lead. He sounded calm and ready to get better for shooting round 3 at Bay Hill.

"For us to grow in Europe and play in Europe, this is a different style of golf here," said Fleewood Golf Channel. "It takes a little time to get used to it, definitely expands the game, I enjoyed this place since I arrived, I enjoy going to work when I'm here."

McIlroy closed as Fleetwood opened with a 3-2-4 finish until this day may eventually propel him to his first degree since Arnold Palmer last year's invitation. After opening the day with bogey, he played the next 17 holes under 8 and may not have missed a shot. Here's a look at the top five strokes purchased from Green Tee.

  1. Rory McIlroy: 9.5
  2. Tommy Fleetwood:
  3. Keith Mitchell: 6.9
  4. Ben Ann: 6.3
  5. Matt Cochter: 6.1

It's obscene.

T3. Jim Furyk, Brian Herman, Ian Poulter, Abraham Ancer (-9): Unnamed: I … Unnamed: Furyk did not see a confrontation on the players this week. He has a beautiful history here, I suppose, but the man is going to be May 9th and has no top 10 in this tournament since he finished second behind Martin Keimer in 2014. Hell, he has not even broken 70 since the last round of that year (11 rounds total.) Then he dumps 64 on Friday? Golf, baby, best.

T7. Jason Day, Kevin Kissner, Keith Mitchell (-8): Day made eight (!) Birds on Friday in his 66th way. All this is only a week after he withdrew from Arnold Palmer inviting and a few days after getting shots on his back, which he talked about earlier this week. "I never had injections before, so we did four injections within the spine and its surroundings, which of course is a lot easier for the pain," said Day. It clearly helped as the 2016 champion has perforated 12 birds on the week, and it is the second only Ancer in total birds made on the week.

T10. Rory Sabatini, John Ram, Dustin Johnson, Ben Ann, Jay T. Poston, Luke List, and Wayne Taylor (-7): MacLeroy was not the only one to rush right at the end of the day on Friday. DJ. Also played the last three holes in the 3rd under, and another star at Rahm joined him by making a boogie on No. 18. Or one of these guys has the firepower to reach twice earlier numbers on Saturday running down McIlroy and Fleetwood.
